The Hungry Ghost Festival

Summary: Poster and banner art for the Hungry Ghost Festival.

Festival poster.

The Hungry Ghost festival is a traditional Buddhist and Taoist festival celebrated in Malaysia and several other countries in Asia. During this festival, it is believed that ones' deceased ancestors roam the land of the living as spirits or ghosts. In an act of fidelity as well as protection from bad luck, offerings of incense and food are given to the spirits and the deity of hell, Da Shi Ye, depicted in blue here. Da Shi Ye is said to have red skin and blue armour, alluded in this depiction.

I wanted to depict Da Shi Ye in a modern feeling poster and banner, deciding to focus on Da Shi Ye's headpiece more than anything else. The bright red makes the blues stand out, casting a striking image of the deity. This was my first time painting with a limited complementary palette, and it was great fun!
